Hunger in our community is a real and serious problem.
The latest USDA Household Food Security Survey estimates that 13% of the people in Boulder & Broomfield Counties are food insecure. That's about 1 in 8 people.
Lack of income = Hard choices. Buy groceries, or pay the rent? Pay the utility bill, or fix the car?
These are choices that no one should have to make. Unfortunately, poverty limits your options, and many people choose shelter over food. Parents report skipping meals themselves so that the children can eat. Survey respondents indicated that, on the average, it would take 6 meals a week per person to get them eating regularly again.
What's it feel like to be hungry? Scary... hopeless... not knowing what to do... unable to sleep...
Fortunately, there is a solution. Food banks can obtain food for pennies on the dollar, because the food industry (grocery sotres, large corporate food packagers, and farmers) donate their imperfect product to us. Also, the USDA provides canned and frozen food to food banks at no charge. We obtain free food from a myriad of sources, just for the cost of freight, personnel, and infrastructure to collect and distribute the food. In this way, we can provide free food to those in need, and it only costs our donors pennies on the dollar. Community Food Share can provide 4 meals for every dollar donated. You can help your neighbors who are struggling. Please join us in our mission to end hunger.
