About Hunger

Many people believe there is no hunger in our community

While the image of Boulder and Broomfield Counties is one of affluence, over 50,000 people in our community are living at or below the poverty line ($27,500 a year for a family of four); that’s enough to fill Folsom Field!   Along with poverty goes hunger and food insecurity – a constant struggle to put food on the table every day - and the daunting task of having to choose between paying for rent, utilities, medical expenses or food.
The majority of people in need of food assistance are low-income working people, making poverty in our community largely invisible.  And many of these people have children. There are 12,000 children enrolled in the federal free lunch program in the Boulder & St. Vrain Valley school districts.
