Goals, Performance and Accountability
Food Distribution
In Fiscal 2011 (year ending June 30, 2011), Community Food Share distributed 7 million meals (1 meal = 1 pound), consistent with nutritional targets in the Food Guide Pyramid. The value of the food distributed was $11,256,625.
Food Distribution Goal for Fiscal Year 2012: The food distribution goal for Fiscal Year 2012 is 7.65 million meals.
Food Distribution Points:
Agencies: Food is distributed through over 50 local Member Agencies, who represent almost all the charities that provide food assistance in Boulder & Broomfield Counties (food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and emergency food box programs). About 75% of the food goes to these agencies. All food is distributed free of charge, including free delivery if needed. Community Food Share is one of only 17 food banks in the Feeding America nationwide network to distribute food to agencies without a handling charge.
Direct Service: CFS also operates direct service programs, which target specific at-risk populations such as families with children enrolled in the federal Free School Lunch program, and low-income seniors. About 25% of the inventory is distributed through this avenue.
Nutritional Indexing. Community Food Share was one of the first food banks in the Feeding America nationwide network of over 200 members, to nutritionally index the supply of food.
Measuring Progress
Needs Assessment; Community Food Share utilizes an evidence-based “Hunger Gap Analysis” methodology that enables us to determine the number of “missing meals” in our service area. A similar methodology is being used by Feeding America. This methodology utilizes the most recent census data on the poverty population, and calculates the amount of food needed by that population to be “food secure.” Food security is defined as three meals per day, for 365 days a year. Our goal is to reduce the size of the "missing meals" gap each year, by increasing the number of pounds of food that are available to people in poverty.
We have met this challenge head on, and have increased our distribution significantly every year up until 2011. In 2011, our growth was constricted by lack of additional space. CFS is currently searching for a larger facility.
